IDentifEYE reflects on online identity by means of multiple viewpoints addressing identity as more than just a collection of data.

In February 2012 Opinion 26 was published by EGE (European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies to the European Commission): Ethics of Information and Communication Technologies.

In the Opinion the concept of identity has a crucial place. Although it recognizes that “digital identity” encompasses matters that concern the identification of a person, it stresses that this is not the whole story. Also important is our identity as a person (Paragraph 3.1.3 – The Concept of Personal Identity in the Digital Era).

The Opinion warns that since the digital identity may be completely disconnected from real life perceptions that are a part of offline communication the concept of “fixed identities” undergoes corrosion and that authenticity and accountability might need new consideration. The Opinion thus underlines the necessity for initiatives aiming to increase the awareness of teachers and school children with regards to online identity.


The primary objectives of IDentifEYE are to:

  • Transfer the best practices and use tools validated through the Children, Data and Emerging Identities project.
  • Extend the Children, Data and Emerging Identities game which supports the pedagogical approach which allows teachers to engage into a learning dialogue with children.
  • Create a new curriculum in which teachers will empower a conscious, creative and critical stance by students as evolving responsible civilians towards online media.
  • Benchmark effective new methodologies and pedagogical strategies as an essential component of the new training programme.
  • Publish the new curriculum and multimedia instructions so that European teachers can implement the training programme themselves.
  • Create an international network to co-create, evaluate and help promote the new curriculum to European teachers.

The innovative character of this project is the combination of the methodological approach with the ICT tools used.
